Service Description

The dates for this specific course are designed as a women's glacier travel and crevasse rescue clinic. This Level 1 workshop is loaded with information to fuel your passion and interest for glacier travel and crevasse rescue. During this 3-day course you will learn basic mountaineering and glacier travel skills. Day 1 (7/17/26) we will meet at our Classroom Yurt (outside of Palmer en route to glacier) at 10am to go over equipment and learn a few knots before heading to the Matanuska Glacier. After everyone is dialed in with their gear and a few basic knots, we will reconvene at the parking lot at the toe of the glacier; about an hour drive from the Yurt. On the ice on this first day, we will begin to work on building anchors and pulley systems, climbing and belaying techniques, and roped glacier travel. Days 2 and 3 will dive deeper into glacier travel skills, crevasse rescue techniques, crevasse rescue scenarios, ice climbing skills, roped-travel techniques, fixed-line ascension skills, anchor building, running belays, route-finding, navigation and so much more. We will camp on the glacier for two nights during this course, returning to the parking lot by 5pm on Day 3, 7/19/26. Please note there is a day use fee that is due to the Matanuska Glacier Park upon entrance, which is $90 per person (total) for the 3 days, which is not included in the course fees and is the responsibility of the student when we arrive to the glacier on Day 1 of the course. A complete gear list and daily course outline will be provided after registration is completed. Some gear is available to borrow from us - other gear is available to rent through AMH in Anchorage. Group climbing gear is included in the course fees. Students must provide their own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking stove, food, etc. Students should have prior backpacking experience and be comfortable carrying a 30-40 pound pack over uneven terrain.
