  • Wilderness EMT (WEMT)

    The WEMT is 180+ hours long and combines the standard Department of Transportation Emergency (DOT) Medical Technician & State of Alaska EMT-1 curriculum with wilderness-specific medical training that focuses on long-term care (our WFR curriculum). This is a unique training course that combines the knowledge and skill for pre-hospital setting response, with the wilderness medical skills to assess and respond to emergencies when definitive care is not readily available. The WEMT course provides basic life support training for the pre-hospital setting including skills such as splinting, hemorrhage control, airway management, oxygen therapy, BLS CPR, medication administration, triage, rescue team management, patient transport, helicopter patient packing and safety, and so much more. The WEMT course is delivered in a hybrid format (flipped classroom). Some of the learning is done at home via weekly assignments and textbook reading so that classroom time is spent on practical skills and simulations. A scheduled ambulance ride-a-long shift (usually 8-12 hours) will also be required. Required Textbook: Emergency Care, 14th Edition/Limmer, O'Keefe - available on Amazon. This course begins 7/6/26 and ends on 7/31/26, on a Monday-Friday schedule, 9am-6pm each day. After successful completion of all program requirements, students will be able to test for State of Alaska or National Registry EMT exams AND SOLO's WEMT Exam. This course is being held at our training center located just 15-20 minutes outside of Palmer. Course details will be sent out about 4 weeks prior to course start date with exact location of the training, course syllabus and outline, gear list, and other important course information.

  • Wilderness First Responder

    SOLO’s Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the recognized industry standard for those who work as backcountry trip leaders, camp counselors, mountain guides, river guides, and ski patrollers. The WFR is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions. This training culminates in earning a nationally recognized 3 year certification through SOLO and also includes Basic Life Support CPR certification. This course will be held 5/11/26-5/19/26 with a full day off in the schedule on 5/15/26. Class will run approximately 9am-6pm each day. You will receive an email about 7-10 days prior to the course with the address of our Yurt and other important course details.

  • Youth Advanced Wilderness First Aid

    This course is for those students that have already taken our Youth Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course. It is a more intense, fast paced training than the WFA and includes a more in depth look at specific traumatic injuries and medical illnesses that could be confronted in the wilderness setting. This course is appropriate for youth ages 14-17. Pre-requisite: Youth Wilderness First Aid Course You will receive an email at least 7 days prior to the course with the address of our training facility and other important course details.

  • Wilderness Youth Safety Education (WYSE)

    WYSE is designed to promote teamwork, leadership, and build outdoor skills, all through an interactive game-like atmosphere. Students learn a variety of outdoor skills such as: navigation, wildlife safety, snow safety, shelter building, fire starting, wilderness first aid, rescue organization, and water safety are just a few of the skills they will be challenged with during this program. The winter-focused WYSE course has a strong emphasis on snow safety (snow shelters, avalanche awareness and rescue, cold weather injury prevention) but will also include navigation skills, fire starting, etc. This course is appropriate for youth ages 7-13. Students must have appropriate clothing for being outdoors and bring a lunch. This course is being held at the Boys and Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula. You will receive an email at least 7 days prior to the course with additional information.

This course begins Wednesday 2/4/2026 with classes occurring every Wednesday and Thursday evening 5-9p through 4/30/2026.   • Wilderness First Aid

    This 2 day WFA course is intensive and covers principles of preventing and treating wilderness injuries; ideal for those that spend time recreating, working, or living in remote settings. This training culminates in earning a nationally recognized 2 year certification through SOLO, the oldest continuously operating wilderness medical school in the world. CPR is also included in this training. Class is 8am-5pm each day, with an hour lunch break. You will receive an email at least 1 week prior to the course start date with the location of this course, schedule, gear list, and other important information regarding the Wilderness First Aid Course.

  • Glacier Travel & Crevasse Rescue Course

    This Level 1 workshop is loaded with information to fuel your passion and interest for glacier travel and crevasse rescue. This course is open to anyone who desires training in glacier travel and crevasse rescue. Participants must be in good physical condition and be able to carry a heavy pack over uneven terrain. During this 3-day course you will learn basic mountaineering and glacier travel skills. Day 1 (6/26/26) we will meet at our Classroom Yurt (outside of Palmer en route to glacier) at 10am to go over equipment and learn a few knots before heading to the Matanuska Glacier. After everyone is dialed in with their gear and a few basic knots, we will reconvene at the parking lot at the toe of the glacier; about an hour drive from the Yurt. On the ice on this first day, we will begin to work on building anchors and pulley systems, climbing and belaying techniques, and roped glacier travel. Days 2 and 3 will dive deeper into glacier travel skills, crevasse rescue techniques, crevasse rescue scenarios, ice climbing skills, roped-travel techniques, fixed-line ascension skills, anchor building, running belays, route-finding, navigation and so much more. We will camp on the glacier for two nights during this course, returning to the parking lot by 6pm on Day 3, 6/28/26. A complete gear list and daily course outline will be provided after registration is completed. Some gear is available to borrow from us - other gear is available to rent through AMH in Anchorage. Group climbing gear is included in the course fees. Students must provide their own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking stove, food, etc., for overnighting on the glacier.

Group climbing gear is included in the course fees. Students must provide their own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, cooking stove, food, etc. Students should have prior backpacking experience and be comfortable carrying a 30-40 pound pack over uneven terrain.
